ICD-10-AM IMPLEMENTATION WORKSHOPS

On the 18th of October 2014, the Council for Cooperative Health Insurance (CCHI) continued their commitment to preparing for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) upcoming implementation of its new coding system - International Classification of Diseases, 10th revisions, Australian Modification (ICD-10-AM) - through the provision of a series of educational workshops. Over 500 people from the medical, nursing and allied health professions, hospital management and health insurance industry participated in the workshops held in Riyadh, Al Khobar, Abha and Jeddah. The workshops were presented by two experienced trainers in the ICD-10-AM system – Anna Coote and Deirdre McDonagh. Anna and Deirdre, both from Australia, have been involved in clinical coding consulting, coding audits and training both in Australia and internationally for many, many years. Two programs were presented in each city – a three day workshop focussing on hospitals with inpatients and a two day program for general practitioners, polyclinics and outpatients. Topics presented included: Steps to implementation Resources needed Clinical coding process Clinical coder training and Funding options After instructions and guidance from Deirdre and Anna, all participants completed introductory coding exercises targeted at both inpatient and outpatient coding. Feedback from those that attended the workshops was extremely positive and everyone thoroughly enjoyed becoming “coders” for the day. These workshops were just a “taste” of ICD-10-AM and a schedule for continuing ICD-10-AM education will be announced in early 2015.
